Goingsomewear,
I have always really enjoyed your comments! As much as I love MXC for its comic qualities, it is totally inappropriate and really just rude. I agree that they are mocking an entire culture. It reminds me of that whole theory on "Orientalism".

I have noticed, particularly lately, all of the racial slur/stereotypes being presented in the media. I watched the movie Borat because everyone kept raving about and I found it on the web so I watched it for free. So why not? I'm a middle class caucasian and it even insulted me!! I only laughed once. One time! I did not find it entertaining at all. And I'm glad you brought up MXC because I think people just look at it as humourous when really, shouldn't it be more offensive? The show is blatently mocking an entire culture. I find it odd and worrisome that such crap is allowed on tv, in our theatres, and in every other form of mass media.

I really like your "wheels" analogy, nice touch! As for the fact that they are trying... yeah sure it is really nice to see that the message is getting out there and all that jazz. But I honestly do not believe that they deserve any credit for it what so ever! If the intentions are ultimately to sell more product and make more money, they can say whatever they want and it won't change a thing. I think that by saying that they are trying we are placing far to much trust in an institution that is doing their best to squeeze every penny out of us...I am going to stop now as I am beginning to appear a tad bit..radical..haha

Maybe it has become a blame game, another round of he-said, she-said. But honestly, considering how the Rebel Sell demonstrated that even trying to be unconventional doesn't really succeed, what makes anyone think that they can change how the advertising world functions!?! Now, maybe that's just cynical. Okay, it is. But I think it's also pragmatic and realistic. Like the wheels of justice, the wheels of social change are inordinately slow to turn, and I question whether there will be a noticeable change in how the consumer market functions before I die. And I still have about 70 years left (I hope).

Nice post. You're absolutely right about the marketing gimmick aspect of the new Dove campaign. On the other hand, at least they're sort of trying. Or like Paul said, his ad exec friend was.

You are cutting out the middle man... so in a sense you are weakening capitalism. Strange to think of it that way. I know that sounded so nerdy, but I just learnt that in contemporary theory today. I also have a friend who sees things that way. But I heard somewhere that musicians make the majority of thier money off of their tours and shows. Which makes sense in a way, is that not where thier true talent shines through?

I have a friend who thinks that it is really wrong to steal music and won't let anyone burn his CD's he says that if we like the music then we should support the band and go out and buy their stuff.

The problem with me is I don't usually like listening to a whole CD and it is hard for me to justify spending $20 on two songs that I am going to end up listening to.

I kind of hate that people are saying that the record business is doing so bad because people are stealing their music. I mean with all the bling they have it kind of seems like they doing ok.

Basically I have started to shop online so that I don't have to spend the jacked up HMV prices but I am still supporting the bands.

I actually just bought the OK Go CD off Amazon and it cost me $12 when I went to HMV they were selling it for $25. I personally think that I have found that happy medium.

Mandy,
in response to your question, i think that for sure i could be nervous about a new technology coming out, and i'm a protective kinda guy, which could lead to me being wary of what my possible future kids would be exposed to, but its the difference between lazy protectiveness (buying a cybernanny), and active protectiveness (educating your kid and not pulling the because-i-said-so card) that I am trying to emphasize. It is obvious that I can't say I know that much about parenting, but I like to think that I'll care enough about my kids to not leave them in the dark, where the imagination is most rampant.

Well I don't care if you got to go down to the floor for free! You are mean and cruel! Anyways, how did your movie blog treat you? Did you find some similarities between it and the concert?....deep..I know.

Personally I think the answer could be found in a more basic theory than social norms. Lets go all the way back to basic animalistic nature and consider the "mob mentality" or "group mentality". Think about how a bird can be very eratic and skittish when on its own and procedes to arbitrarily do what it pleases when it pleases. But then notice what happens when it becomes part of a bigger group? ever notice how when one bird changes direction all birds do so in that same direction near simultaneously? The same goes for schools of fish or herds of cattle. Now I don't believe in some sort of sub-liminal or subconscious telepathic connections between separate living entities, but I would think it is safe to say that there are some underlying natural habbits and understandings that influence groups of organisms... And a mob of people in that sense is no different than a school of fish. They may act completely differently when single and on their own, but once all together their actions and reactions become very synchronized. In the case of the concert, it seems out of place not to get excited, to sing along, and to have that butterfly feeling. Think about it...

And BNL was an amazing concert!

I thought that they put on a great concert. I haven't really listened to BNL since their Born on a Pirate Ship album, but their really new stuff sounds pretty good. They really know how to get the crowd excited. I think that people acting a certain way because of certain social norms is exactly what they try to play around with -- how do they get people to stop being so sefl-conscious and feel comfortable letting loose.
p.s. we ended up getting to go on the floor for free!
