Well I must say that this is news to me, I definelty thought that the media was not under the control of anyone really but themselves. So maybe even though there are regulations, does anyone really have much power over the media? Maybe for example, if someone were to claim that some form of media has oversteped the rules, would the media corporation not just pay off the individuals before bad press could circulate? I mean I have never been involved in any legal cases, but I think that, that might just happen.
As I was reading through the ‘Moral Principles’ I noticed, “Social Responsibility Ethics”. I think that all theories where someone presents an idea that allows a person or group of people to decide the better for all of society. It just really seems so ridicoulus to me. Sure maybe and I mean maybe the people of power behind global, are responsible enough to screen what is being presented to the majority of its viewers. But then what happens when their positions are taken by others, when they retire or quit, or whatever condition would cause them to leave. We know have new people taking on this responsibility…but what assures us that these people will be as responsible.
So not only is that an issue with this theory, but does it not bother you just a tad to think that as you sit there watching TV someone else is deciding whether or not it is appropriate for you to be viewing. It reminds me of that feeling I had when I was 16 and my parents would not let me watch certain movies, because to them I was still too young. So even though I could drive on my own, stay out till mid night, there is no way that I a old enough to see a sex scene on TV.
Finally I would like to take a second to tell you all that this class has gotten me addicted to my computer. Never before have I watched so many episodes of The Office, maybe because I did not know that they were so accesible. Oh and to all of you who are arguing about Scrubs, Greys and whatever else, my vote is for House.
House and Scrubs should pull in about even in my books.
And in regards to your media comments: the fact that there are supposed regulations means nearly nothing when there are some media conglomerates that own and control so many various facets of official and unofficial media outlets (tv stations, news programs, internet websites, blogs, news papers, magazines, advertisements, political and celebrity puppets, and so on…) that basically regulations wouldnt matter. Because hell, they probably own the people who made the regulations anyways. Its an interesting dilemma to not know what or who to believe when in theory the “hard facts” being distributed may be altered, over emphasized or ommitted simply by decision of those fact’s owners, creators and distributors. Its a scary scary thought in a scary world. But if you want interesting outlooks on media and politics I would suggest reading blogs from this website: http://www.matthewgood.org where he has created an entire network of bloggers and conversations to which he sometimes contributes. But alot of the posts they make there or link to are very insightful. They may not be truthful and they may be rather left field sometimes, perhaps they are as powerfully deceiving as the earlier discussed media even, but its some great food for thought.
Summing up this whole conversation; I think sometimes that “seeing is believing” may soon become a much more valuable saying as we start to realize our “truthful and trustworthy” media sources may not be so squeaky clean and innocent as they appear.
In the future trustworthy sources of information may be found few and far between…
Another great read to stimulate similar thought to a degree of taking control of entire civilizations through misinformation and indoctrination is George Orwell’s “1984″. If you’re not much of a reader “V for Vendetta” is basically based on that book, with more violence to catch the lesser human’s simple attentions.
With that I leave you.
Goodnight
Who ever thought that information could be “owned” by something… It gives me a headache to think about it for any lengthy period of time.
Well Wade, I think that you have some very valid points here, and yeah its scary to think about just how much power they actually have. So I am now going to pull a Wade and leave you with a thought to ponder and with any luck deprive you of sleep. Corporations have caught on to our spectatisms and are trying to use that to sell to us. A perfect example of this is a Dove ad that came out not to long ago, it revealed all of the work and alterations that are done to models to make thier ads flawless. And in doing this they are trying to say that Dove accpets you just the way that you are and by using thier products you are being your own beautiful self…sick
